The Eon/RWE partnership.... Horizon have issued a newsletter this week to update us all on their plans for Oldbury.
Bad timing given the latest announcement on the DECC re-consultation on the NPS most of it must surely now be out of date!
Also we assume it was printed before RWE's Chief Exec announced they will not invest in new nuclear without public subsidy (see blogs earlier this week below). It is a very clear requirement of the Coalition that these will only be built without public subsidy so we can only conclude that RWE are pulling out of Oldbury altogether!! Does this mean Eon are going it alone? I guess we will just have to wait and see!

With the other more significant annoucements this week we have not had time to respond to this but here are our initial thoughts and we will be writing to Horizon about this shortly:
1. Did anyone actually receive one of the 14,000 copies distributed by hand? Please email us if you did, as usual many of us didnt!
2. At the public meeting in March, they told us they were investigating the cooling tower options but their preferred option was the monstrously hideous 200m high gravity towers which no one here wants. We were promised details of the outcome of their cooling tower investigation this summer. They now say by the end of the year. Why on earth are they delaying announcing this crucial piece of information another 6 months? Could it be that they want DECC to believe that they still might go for the smaller noisy and less efficient towers until the NPS is ratified... well now that this has been delayed until the Spring of 2011 we will have to wait and see if they delay yet further to keep DECC and the local community in the dark on the final decision on this.
3. They are planning to flood us with yet further consultations on the SOCC etc in the Autumn of this year... the timing of this alongside the Govt re-consultation on the NPS will undoubtedly cause considerable confusion locally yet again. If they have any concern about avoiding this they will we hope postpone or do they want to seek to distract us from the more important 2nd round of NPS consultations, just as they did last winter with the DECC's first round on the NPS!
4. They are planning to set up a 'Project Liaison Group' to improve the flow of information to and from the local community. Will SANE be properly represented in this new group? We await an invitation with baited breath!
5. They still havent responded to our replies to their public consultation last year... we were told this would be put up on their website... no sign of this there as yet and its not even mentioned in their newsletter. Is this how their public consultations are to be run.... consult to distract us and then ignore what we say and do what they want anyway!

These Horizon folk seem to me to be slippery folk who are desperately trying to keep new build at Oldbury on the agenda... despite their recent setbacks.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work.
No I didn't receive a handout. I am on their mailing list: nothing from there either, despite a promise from their PR people that we would be kept in the loop.
ReplyDeleteNo one here has received it either! they claim they have distributed 14,000 hard copies but goodness knows where they dropped them this time probably in the bin outside their offices! Hope they at least used the recycle collection bins!
ReplyDeletePerhaps they dumped them in the River Severn! They clearly dont give a damn about the beautiful Severn Valley with their plans so I wouldnt put it past them.
ReplyDeletejust received one with a hand-written envelop. I wonder if someone's read this blog?
