Hitachi- from the country that brought the world Fukushima
We feel very sad for the people of Japan who want to end nuclear energy whilst a potential new government and big business are desperate for it

No Fukushima at Oldbury

No to Fukushima at Shepperdine!

Latest news from Robert Peston on the BBC website---- Would you invest in nuclear?

People are now realising that new nuclear could be a dead duck!!

Robert Peston:-

1130: One of the most difficult areas of negotiation between the Lib Dems and the Tories was on nuclear power, where the Lib Dems take the view that new nuclear power should not receive a public subsidy of any sort, says the BBC's business editor Robert Peston. In the end, as I understand, nuclear power is one of those areas where the two have agreed to disagree, which creates considerable uncertainty for the two big companies, EDF and Centrica, that are hoping to roll out a series of enormous new nuclear power stations.

We are finally moving away from giving the French nuclear industry a massive injection for no benefit to the UK!

  1. err - you know the cooling towers like that are for conventional power stations don't you?! Look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hinkley_Point_Nuclear_Power_Station.jpg can't see them anywhere! If you can't get that right, you're probably not the place to find reliable information about the pros and cons of nuclear power. I'd strongly suggest reading The Vanishing Face of Gaia: A Final Warning: Enjoy It While You Can by James Lovelock - we're absolutely screwed unless we go nuclear.

  2. Do you realise that they do not need cooling towers at Hinkley as it is not on the estuary and therefore the water can be discharged straight into the sea---At Oldbury at the moment, because the reactors only produce 800 megawatts, it is deemed acceptable to dump the hot water into the river without causing too much of a plume.

The new power plants will be 3300 megawatts and the volume of hot water is too great to be dumped straight into the river---It must go through conventional convection cooling towers at 200m high and 147m wide.

Please have a look at the Horizon website and get your facts right before you criticise others.

  3. Re the above comment "If you can't get that right, you're probably not the place to find reliable information about the pros and cons of nuclear power"

SANE have their facts right read about it yourself.... I was at the developers consultation meeting and can confirm what is said above... the developer wants to put up 3 or 4 new 200m high cooling towers which will be more than 2 x the height of didcot power station and amongst the tallest in the world!!! SANEs pictures are reasonably accurate....the fan assisted smaller towers (still not far off the height of Didcot!) are too expensive and therefore call into question the viability of their proposal.... so this is their preferred option its all there on the developers proposals detailed in their website... you need to get your facts right matey read a bit more of our blog ... see south glos councils response they confirm this is what they propose also.
