We feel very sad for the people of Japan who want to end nuclear energy whilst a potential new government and big business are desperate for it

Public Statement from Horizon Nuclear Power

ear local resident

Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, our heart-felt sympathy goes out to all those who have been affected.

Horizon's shareholder companies RWE and E.on have both made offers of technical and logistical support for the teams in Japan who are tackling the situation at the Fukushima 1 plant. With the incident still unfolding, and without first hand involvement, it’s difficult for us to comment further on the specifics.

I would, however, like to update you on our position in relation to our proposals for a new nuclear power station near Oldbury on Severn. As has always been the case, safety is our absolute priority. The UK nuclear industry has one of the strictest regulatory regimes in the world and, as a result, has an excellent safety record. The UK’s nuclear power stations are built with a significant range of safety measures in place to ensure they can withstand extreme situations without causing harm to the public or the environment.

From a UK perspective, there are clearly different geological considerations to take into account compared to those in Japan. And, while no decisions have been made about the technology a new nuclear power station at Oldbury may employ, you can be assured it will be assessed extremely thoroughly by the regulators to ensure its safety.

That said, there is never room for complacency and we welcome the recent announcement by Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, that the Chief Nuclear Inspector Dr Mike Weightman will prepare a report on the lessons that can be learned from the current events in Japan.

While we will continue to develop our proposals, we will take full account of the results of this report to help guide our ongoing work and will continue to ensure all relevant safety considerations are central to our planning.

We will provide further updates as the situation develops but in the meantime, if you have any questions please contact us either via or enquiries inbox at oldburyenquiries@horizonnuclearpower.com  or call our free phone number on 0800 130 3125.

Yours faithfully
